Commissioning SEND support can feel like a significant decision. Schools are navigating increasingly complex needs, competing pressures and limited capacity, all while striving to do the very best for pupils and staff.
It’s completely understandable that schools want clarity before engaging with a service:
• Is this the right fit for our setting?
• Will this genuinely strengthen our SEND provision?
• How does this support differ from other services we already access?
This blog responds to some of the most common questions schools ask us and offers a clearer picture of our approach, values and how SEND Hub North West works with schools and trusts.
Within this blog you’ll find:
• How does SEND Hub North West differ from Local Authority services?
• Who do you work with?
• Do you work with MATs as well as individual schools?
• How do schools access support?
• Do we need to commit to a contract?
• What if a pupil won’t engage?
• Will we work with the same specialist?
• How can we give feedback?
How does SEND Hub North West differ from Local Authority services?
Local Authority services play a vital statutory role, and many schools value their involvement. SEND Hub North West is an independent specialist SEND service, offering flexible, responsive support shaped by the needs and priorities of schools.
As an independent service, we are able to:
• Focus on early, preventative and capacity‑building work, rather than crisis‑driven responses
• Create space to think with schools about what will make a sustainable difference in practice, not solely what is required for paperwork or compliance
• Respond flexibly to the context and priorities of individual settings, adapting support as needs evolve
Our work is rooted in developing confident practice within schools, so support doesn’t end when a piece of work finishes. Our specialist teacher reports contribute towards statutory processes and inform next steps with other agencies, providing clear, structured evidence to support professional decision‑making, including supporting requests for an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) and informing or supporting required EHCP amendments.
Through this work, we support schools to unearth understanding, enrich provision and create the conditions for pupils to thrive.
Who do you work with?
We work across a wide range of educational contexts, including:
• Primary and secondary schools
• Specialist provisions
• Inclusion and alternative settings
Our support may involve:
• Consultation around individual pupils or groups of pupils
• Pupil assessments and observations to support early identification of needs (assessment for clarity)
• SEND consultancy, supporting SENDCos and school leaders to reflect, plan and strengthen provision (e.g. enhanced provision)
• Training and professional development to build confidence and capacity
• Review and development of SEND systems and whole‑school approaches
At the heart of our work is a belief that supporting the adults around a child is one of the most powerful ways to improve outcomes, particularly when schools are given time and space to think, reflect and act with confidence.
Do you work with MATs as well as individual schools?
Yes, we do.
Some MATs work with SEND Hub North West at a strategic level, focusing on:
• Consistency and quality of SEND practice across schools
• Shared professional development and SEND leadership support
• Strengthening confidence and clarity across SEND systems and provision
Other Trusts prefer individual schools to engage independently. We are comfortable working in either way and adapt our approach to reflect how each MAT or setting is structured.
When working across a MAT, we often support both central teams and individual schools, helping to think systemically about SEND priorities, pressures and sustainable development over time.
How do schools access support?
We recommend that schools get in touch with us by email to start the conversation.
We are always happy to arrange a free, brief consultation call. This gives us the opportunity to:
• Understand the needs, context and priorities of your setting
• Discuss what you are hoping to achieve
• Offer advice on the most appropriate package of support or assessment, tailored to your situation
Following this conversation, we will share our booking link and Service Level Agreement, allowing schools to move forward with clarity and confidence.
Do we need to commit to a contract?
No.
Some schools access SEND Hub North West for specific pieces of work, such as consultation, specialist teacher input or training. Others choose more ongoing support (for example, a block package of 10 or 20 hours) and a service agreement.
An ongoing arrangement can support:
• Forward planning and continuity
• Protected time across the year
• Reduced administrative burden
• A deeper understanding of school context and priorities
We’re happy to talk through the options and support schools to decide what will work best for them.
What if a pupil won’t engage?
This is a common and understandable concern.
Our approach is respectful, neuro‑affirming and relationship‑led. Pupils are never forced to engage, and their comfort, consent and voice are always prioritised.
Where direct engagement isn’t possible, meaningful support can still happen through:
• Consultation with school and families
• Observations and review of learning
• Analysis of existing information and provision
• Thoughtful planning with key adults
Often, the most significant impact comes from adjustments to adult practice, provision and environment, rather than direct pupil involvement alone.
Will we work with the same specialist?
Where support is ongoing, we aim for consistency so relationships can develop and understanding can deepen.
Occasionally, changes are necessary due to availability or the focus of work. When this happens, transitions are managed carefully, and all specialists work within shared values, frameworks and expectations to ensure continuity and quality.
How can we give feedback?
We value feedback and use it to reflect on and strengthen our work.
Schools are invited to share feedback following pieces of support, and we also gather wider reflections to understand how our offer is working across different contexts.
If you would like to share specific feedback or reflections at any point, we welcome this directly.
Final thoughts
SEND Hub North West is about more than providing support in the moment. Our work is grounded in:
• Building confidence and clarity
• Creating space to reflect and think
• Strengthening inclusive, sustainable practice
• Supporting schools to feel less alone in complex SEND decision‑making
Above all, we aim to provide expert SEND support when schools need it most, helping schools to unearth understanding, enrich practice and ensure pupils and settings can thrive.
If you’d like to explore whether SEND Hub North West could be a good fit for your school or trust, we’d be very happy to talk.
